Residents in La Carlota and La Castellana, Negros Occidental who were affected by Kanlaon Volcano's recent "explosive eruption" received aid from GMA Kapuso Foundation's Operation Bayanihan project.
According to "24 Oras" Friday, the residents have been affected by ashfall and lack of water supply.
"'Yung pagputok, wala na kaming tubig. Humingi ako ng tulong sa city na mabigyan kami ng supply ng tubig," said Leonora Robles, barangay captain of San Miguel in La Carlota.
The GMA Kapuso Foundation, with the help of the 62nd Infantry Battalion and 303rd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army, distributed food packs and N95 masks to over 5,000 individuals in La Carlota and more than 1,000 individuals in La Castellana.
"Aside sa security assistance, transportation assistance at the same time tumulong o kami sa pagrerepack nitong mga foodstuff at sa paghahatid, pagbibigay sa ating mga kababayang nasalanta," said Lt Col Evelio C. Ilanga III, commanding officer 62nd Infantry Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division.
The second wave of aid is set to arrive and will continue throughout the weekend.
For those who wish to support GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, and Shopee. Visit the GMA Kapuso Foundation website for more information.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island had an explosive eruption on Tuesday morning.
On Wednesday, the Office of Civil Defense said that it is expecting more evacuees due to the intense ashfall caused by the explosive eruption. Per the OCD, there are about 2,000 families who are currently in the evacuation centers.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) has suspended tourism activities in various areas in Negros Occidental following the eruption.
Kanlaon Volcano also erupted on June 3, 2024 and December 9, 2024.
