Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla responds to senators’ questions regarding the Philippines’ residual obligations to the International Criminal Court (ICC) following its withdrawal from the tribunal, during a public hearing on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
Senate PRIB
MANILA, Philippines — Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla insisted he should not inhibit in the case that linked former House speaker and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez to the flood control scandal.
Speaking at the “Executive Session” program of radio dzRH yesterday, Remulla maintained the duty of the ombudsman was “to side with the victims… to prevent corruption and abuse of power and punish offenders” as mandated by the Constitution.
“How will we punish if I inhibit? It is our duty, that is our responsibility in the Constitution… No such thing as inhibition,” he said.
He also told someone he did not name to “go back to law school” as he may have been absent when the duties of the ombudsman were taught.
Previously, Romualdez’s lawyers from Villaraza & Angangco Law Offices accused Remulla of prejudging the lawmaker.
Remulla also confirmed Romualdez was among the personalities covered by the freeze order recently issued by the Court of Appeals, which included 25 bank accounts and 10 insurance policies linked to him.
More freeze orders should be expected in the coming days, warned Remulla, as the ombudsman is set to file “around five to six cases.”
Previously, the Sandiganbayan approved the ombudsman’s bid to issue a precautionary hold departure order against Romualdez.
