Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla
STAR / Ryan Baldemor
MANILA, Philippines — The Office of the Ombudsman assured the public that Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla is in good health, following reports of his 2023 blood cancer diagnosis.
In a statement on Monday, October 27, the office said that Remulla has been cancer-free for a year and a half.
“Ang kanyang kamakailang pahayag tungkol sa kanyang kalusugan ay nasa past tense, dahil tumutukoy ito sa kanyang karanasan bago pa siya maupo bilang Ombudsman,” the Office of the Ombudsman said in a statement.
(His recent statement about his health is in the past tense, because it refers to his experience before he was seated as Ombudsman.)
On October 24, Remulla told journalist Luchi Cruz-Valdez that he was diagnosed with leukemia, a type of blood cancer, following his quintuple bypass surgery.
He fully recovered after chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, with his son serving as the donor.
In June 2023, Remulla took a wellness leave following heart bypass surgery after doctors discovered blockages in his heart.
The former Cavite representative, who previously served as Secretary of Justice, was appointed Ombudsman on Oct. 7, 2025.
