MANILA, Philippines — Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy has appealed to organizers of the Sinulog Festival not to accept sponsorship offers from gambling establishments as this is against the values of Señor Sto. Niño.

In a post on social media, Uy reminded Sinulog organizers that accepting donations from gambling companies would send conflicting messages.

He said  that Sinulog is not just an annual cultural event, but a religious celebration in honor of the image of the child Jesus.

“For this reason, I hope that organizers of the Sinulog Festival will refrain from accepting sponsorships from gambling establishments. Such partnerships may generate funds, but will send conflicting messages to devotees and communities,” Uy said.

He urged organizers to look for partners who value faith, family, culture and community.

Receiving donations from gambling sources is contradictory to the values taught by the Santo Niño, who symbolizes innocence, purity and trust in God, Uy said.

“Aligning a sacred celebration with industries that often contribute to social problems does not honor the values that the Santo Niño represents,” he added.

Uy said the Sinulog is a powerful tool for evangelization as devotees, particularly the youth, consider the celebration as an inspiration and guidance.

He said that accepting donations from such companies would create a moral inconsistency as gambling is a destructive habit.
