Adamson is in good hands with Shaina Nitura as the talented outside hitter broke multiple UAAP records in just her rookie season
MANILA, Philippines – Shaina Nitura knows Adamson needs to work doubly hard if it wants its seat at the UAAP table.
Nitura said the Lady Falcons are learning what it takes to be a contender after an auspicious end to their campaign in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament that allowed Adamson to finish fifth with a 6-8 record.
The Lady Falcons won three of their last four games, pulling off back-to-back upset victories against Final Four teams NU and FEU then scoring a sweep of UP on Sunday, April 27.
“We understand better how we’re going to fight and work for Season 88 because the collegiate level is not to be taken lightly,” said Nitura in Filipino.
“If we want a bigger spot in the UAAP, we have to work harder than we did this [time].”
Adamson is certainly in good hands as Nitura — the MVP in the UAAP junior ranks last year — dominated from the get-go en route to a historic rookie season.
Firing 33 points in her seniors debut, Nitura went on to breach the 30-point mark for a record six games, including a 38-point explosion that broke the previous women’s single-game scoring mark of 35 points notched by Ateneo great Alyssa Valdez (Season 75) and UST standout Sisi Rondina (Season 81).
The 20-year-old outside hitter also reset the single-season scoring record for both the women’s and men’s divisions as she totaled 371 points in 14 games, eclipsing the 312 points Valdez set in Season 77 and the 344 points established by UST stalwart Mark Gil Alfafara in Season 76.
Her sustained scoring brilliance paved the way for the Lady Falcons to improve on their Season 86 run, where Adamson posted a 3-11 card for seventh place.
The Lady Falcons finished with the same record as the Fighting Maroons this season but won the tiebreaker to secure the fifth spot.
“We made it our goal to get fifth in case we did not make the Final Four,” said Nitura. “We’re grateful for what we achieved.”
“Of course, our goal this season was the Final Four, but thank you Lord because we’re here.”
The Lady Falcons will bid goodbye to graduating players May Ann Nuique, Jen Villegas, and Ayesha Juegos. – Rappler.com
