MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government has opened its own water testing laboratory to ensure the safety and quality of water used in households across the city.
“This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to providing clean and safe drinking water to all residents. We are taking proactive steps to protect our communities from diseases related to poor water quality,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said in a statement.
The establishment of the water testing laboratory is in line with a city ordinance mandating the regular monitoring and testing of water sources in the city.
Located at the QC Health Department building at the city hall compound, the laboratory will serve as a testing site in conducting regular microbiological examinations of drinking water from all 382 regular sampling sites in the city.
The sites represent households served by Maynilad and Manila Water, the two water concessionaires operating in the city.
According to the city government, the initiative was a response to a 2023 report that identified acute gastroenteritis as the 32nd leading cause of death in the city.
“The laboratory will also test water from all refilling stations and ice plants… to ensure compliance with water safety and quality standards established by the Department of Health and the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water 2017,” city hall said.
