MANILA, Philippines — The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have designated Quezon City and Baguio City as among the new members of its Global Network of Learning Cities.

The network, which includes 425 cities from 91 countries, commits to promote lifelong learning by providing opportunities through reskilling and upskilling of workers, providing literacy, empowering citizens to navigate evolving landscapes and fostering entrepreneurial mindsets.

“Education transcends the classroom. It is a collective endeavor, and cities play a key role in promoting learning for all,” Stefania Giannini, UNESCO’s assistant director-general for education, said.

The 72 new UNESCO Learning Cities are redefining what it means to learn – turning every street, library, workplace, museum and home into a space for knowledge and innovation, Giannini said.

“By making education a priority, from early childhood through adulthood, these cities are empowering people and unlocking opportunities for all,” she said.

Quezon City and Baguio joined Balanga and Legazpi as among the Philippines cities that are part of the network.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said the city’s designation reaffirms its commitment to championing initiatives that strengthen and modernize education.

“In Quezon City, we believe that learning is not confined to classrooms alone. It happens across everyday spaces and throughout all stages of life, which is why we work to ensure that wherever our QCitizens are, they have equitable opportunities to develop their full potential,” Belmonte said.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong described the designation as a “milestone and a testament to Baguio’s strong culture of learning and community empowerment.”

“This recognition from UNESCO places Baguio on the world map not only as a creative city but also as a learning city,” Magalong said.
