MANILA, Philippines — The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) surged past the 6,000 mark yesterday, buoyed by indications of possibly another rate cut by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

The PSEi jumped by 0.78 percent or 46.72 points to cap off yesterday’s session at 6,036.72.

The broader All Shares index, however, stayed in negative territory, slipping by 0.54 percent or 18.49 points to settle at 3,434.94.

“The PSEi gained for the second straight trading day, up for the fourth day in five trading days after the latest dovish statements by BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. on the possibility of another BSP rate cut if the economic recovery would take longer than expected,” RCBC chief economist Michael Ricafort said.

Remolona signaled the possibility of one final rate cut in 2026, depending on incoming data amid weaker domestic growth and lingering fallout from the flood control scandal.

Ricafort said the return of the benchmark index back to the 6,000 territory is a good signal for the local financial markets, especially if such level is sustained.

All sectors were in the green, with mining and oil, as well as property and financials indexes gaining by more than one percent each.

Total turnover value inched up to P7.28 billion from the previous day’s P7.06 billion.

Market breadth, however, was negative as decliners edged out advancers in another close contest, 96 to 92, while 57 issues did not change hands.

BDO Unibank was the session’s top traded stock, soaring by 4.26 percent to P127.20 per share, followed by ICTSI, which improved by 0.33 percent to P610.
