MANILA, Philippines — Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos recently issued a prayer for the healing of past grievances and for the reconciliation of the country’s leaders.

In its official Facebook account, the Diocese of Antipolo on March 28 asked the Catholic faithful to pray the “Prayer for Peace, Unity and Healing” amid the continuing division among the country’s leaders.

“Today, we lift up our beloved country, the Philippines. We come to you in this time of discord and division, asking for Your divine intervention, for healing, and for unity,” Bishop Santos said in the prayer.

“Lord, we pray for reconciliation. Let past grievances and wounds be healed by Your mercy. May those who are divided by politics and opposing views find unity in shared dreams for a better tomorrow. Let kindness and understanding triumph over hostility and division,” he added.

The Antipolo prelate also asked for the Lord to fill the hearts of the leaders with wisdom that they may rule with humility, integrity and would have the sincere desire to serve the people.

Leaders, he mentioned in the prayer, should also be selfless and collaborate with others to work for the common good, and that they would be guided by justice, honesty and compassion.

“Teach all of us to see humanity in one another, to respect and honor differences, and to work hand-in-hand to build a brighter future,” the bishop said.

Santos asked the Lord to move the hearts of the Filipino people. “May we stand as a bright light of encouragement to the world, united in purpose and love.”

He also asked for blessings for the country, for it to continue to prosper and its resources to be used for the benefit of its people.

Many believe that the recent political events have caused further division in the country. There have lately been a series of street rallies where supporters of Rodrigo Duterte expressed their opposition to the move of the Marcos administration to arrest and surrender the former president to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, where he is facing crimes against humanity of murder charges in relation to deaths during the implementation of the war on drugs.
