MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is exhibiting resilience in its revenue efforts in the face of threats posed by higher duties, raising close to P15 billion in the first half of the year.

Latest revenue data showed that the PPA has raised its revenue by 14 percent to P14.67 billion as of June from P12.91 billion a year ago, on the strength of the shipping industry to weather risks.

The PPA, celebrating its 51st anniversary this month, is also benefitting from the sustained demand for leisure travel, as seaports serve as gateways to islands without airports.

PPA general manager Jay Santiago said cargo throughput increased by eight percent to 148.93 million metric tons between January and June.

Likewise, container traffic in ports went up by 11 percent to 4.16 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), as shippers appear unbothered by global risks.

Similarly, passenger traffic in ports improved by 10 percent to 45.99 million, driven by bookings for sea travel among Filipinos.

Santiago also said that cruise passenger volume nearly doubled to 143,149, lifted by the return of high-end ships to local destinations.

The PPA facilitated the ship call of 340,494 vessels in the first half, up by nine percent from a year ago.

To cover the increasing demand, Santiago said the PPA is delivering 90 projects nationwide this year, made up of 38 in Luzon, 30 in Visayas and 22 in Mindanao.

Between January and June, the regulator of domestic ports upgraded its infrastructure in Bataan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Romblon and Quezon.

In Visayas, the PPA topped off the capacity improvements for ports in Bacolod, Bohol and Iloilo. The agency also expanded several ports in Mindanao, particularly in Cagayan de Oro, Camiguin, Davao del Sur and Misamis Oriental.
