POPE Leo XIV has named Bishop Alberto “Abet” Uy of Tagbilaran as the new Archbishop of Cebu, replacing Archbishop Jose Palma, whose resignation the pope accepted after he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75.
The Vatican released the announcement through its official daily bulletin.
At 58, Archbishop-designate Uy becomes the fifth prelate to lead the Archdiocese of Cebu, which many consider the “cradle of Christianity in the Philippines.”
Uy was born in 1966 in Ubay, Bohol. He studied philosophy at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran and theology at St. John Mary Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro, where he earned a master’s degree in pastoral ministry.
He later completed a licentiate in sacred theology at the Loyola School of Theology in Quezon City and a doctorate in sacred theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

The Diocese of Talibon ordained Uy a priest in 1993. He served as parish vicar, dean of seminarians at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, and vice-rector of St. John Mary Vianney Seminary.
In October 2016, Pope Francis appointed him as Bishop of Tagbilaran, and Uy assumed the post on Jan. 6, 2017.
