MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has heightened monitoring in key areas following online calls for protest actions, including a motorcade rally expected to pass through EDSA, ahead of planned mobilization on March 11 to mark the first anniversary of the arrest and detention of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
The motorcade will reportedly start along EDSA and end at Villamor Air Base.
“We are closely monitoring developments and coordinating with local units to ensure public safety,” PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said. “While we respect the right to peaceful assembly, we also have the mandate to ensure that there will be no incident that will disrupt normal activities and threaten peace and order.”
Nartatez ordered increased police deployment along the planned route of the motorcade and other key areas, including Davao City, Duterte’s political bailiwick, in anticipation of demonstrations.
Nartatez reminded police personnel to maintain order and to observe maximum tolerance during the protests.
“Remember, our strength lies in professionalism and restraint. Uphold the law, protect our citizens and lead by example,” Nartatez said.
