MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police is investigating the reported threat on the life of Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro, as PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. orders regional units to tighten security around the local executive.
Nartatez ordered the Police Regional Office-7 and Cebu Police Provincial Office to intensify intelligence monitoring after the governor claimed that P2.5 million has been raised for an assassination plot against her.
“We have already mobilized our regional personnel not only to step up the security measures, but also to identify and run after all those behind this threat,” Nartatez said.
He stressed that the same kind of security is given to public officials who experience harassments and threats.
Baricuatro recently went public with claims of a serious security threat, saying that a P2.5-million contract has been placed for her life.
She cited an intelligence report that said a killer from Mindanao has been tasked to do the job. The plot allegedly involves an attack outside of Cebu.
While verification is ongoing, Nartatez ordered the deployment of additional tactical security personnel to ensure there will be no loopholes in the governor’s security.
He noted that President Marcos and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier issued directives to ensure the safety and security of all elected officials.
Nartatez said the PNP continues to strengthen coordination with local authorities and maintain visible presence in all areas frequented by the Cebu governor. – Mark Ernest Villeza
