MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Robinhood Padilla and others who assisted Sen. Ronald dela Rosa in eluding arrest will face justice, the Philippine National Police said yesterday.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said Padilla should be charged for helping Dela Rosa, a fugitive facing an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for crimes against humanity.
Drivers, security escorts and owners of backup vehicles involved in Dela Rosa’s departure from the Senate have been identified, Nartatez noted.
Charges of obstruction of justice against Padilla and others have been recommended to the Department of Justice by the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.
A CIDG investigation showed Dela Rosa did not merely hitch a ride in Padilla’s vehicle.
An organized operation reportedly allowed Dela Rosa to leave the Senate premises on May 14.
The PNP has coordinated with transport agencies to trace the ownership and movements of vehicles linked to Dela Rosa’s escape.
Defending the PNP’s public disclosure of high-profile raids on Dela Rosa’s suspected hideouts, Nartatez maintained that “tactical movements, intelligence gathering and field operations remain strictly confidential.”
No advance notices are being provided to people facing arrest, Nartatez said.
