MANILA, Philippines — Following the arrest of a suspected Chinese spy in Batangas, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has beefed up operations against espionage.

Intelligence-gathering activities of foreign agents should be investigated by police units, in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Bureau of Immigration (BI) and other security agencies, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered yesterday.

The AFP has reported an increase in the number of foreigners arrested on suspicion of espionage.

On Feb. 20, BI agents arrested Zhi Ling Gua at the Batangas port for posing as a Filipino using fake documents.

Found liable for material misrepresentation, Zhi reportedly used multiple identities to obtain a passport and other Philippine documents.

On Feb. 12, authorities apprehended a Mongolian man in Zambales for alleged links to the People’s Liberation Army.

The suspect had reportedly taken aerial photos of the Iba airport and surrounding areas.

“We will work closely with the BI to verify whether these arrested foreign nationals are connected and to uncover the full scope of their activities in the country,” Nartatez said.
