How do Pia Arcangel and Ivan Mayrina fight fake news?
On Friday’s “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,” the Kapuso news anchors said they go where the audience is.
“We have to also infiltrate the same platforms, Tito Boy. That’s why, kumbaga, fight fire with fire, ‘di ba?” Pia said.
According to the broadcast journalist, they are encouraged to use their own social media and digital platforms to put the news out there.
“Kasi parang ang theory diyan, kung may lumabas na fake news, eh ‘di ilabas mo ‘yung totoo. And the more you put out the truth, then you’ll be able to drown out ‘yung fake news. So ‘yun ‘yung challenge, I guess,” she said.
Ivan agreed, adding that the audience is also on TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and more.
“Do’n kami bumabato rin aside from, of course, our main platform, television. Pero we are also required, for example, ‘yung mga spiels namin for news, meron din dapat version ‘yan for online, which we—that’s the general direction,” he said.
When asked why they are proud to be doing what they do, Pia said that it comes from knowing that they have an important role to play.
“It’s not just a career eh. I always think of this as a public service. What we do is a public service, so we have an important role to play in society. Parang meron talaga kaming papel na kailangang gampanan,” she said.
According to Pia, journalists deliver what the people need to know, just like how they continued to report news when everyone was afraid to go outside during the rise of Covid.
Ivan followed, “Being able to influence the agenda, the national agenda for the day, being able to ask the questions directly to people that matter.”
“Like in my case, I get to ask questions directly to the President. At ‘yon ay nakakaapekto sa pinaguusapan ng sambayanan sa buong maghapon, and that, of course, reflects in their decisions sa buhay nila.”
He said that it feels good knowing that he has that function for the society.
