MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines and Japan have started negotiations on an Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) that – if adopted – would allow the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the Philippine military to exchange supplies and services.
Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya said Monday discussions between Manila and Tokyo on a potential Agreement on the Security of Information are also ongoing.
President Marcos and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced in April that the two countries agreed to begin negotiations on ACSA.
On Monday, Endo hosted with Escort Flotilla 4 commander Rear Adm. Natsui Takashi a reception aboard the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force vessel JS Ise, in celebration of the 71st Anniversary of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. The vessel was docked at the Port of Manila.
National Security Adviser Eduardo Año and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. delivered congratulatory remarks, highlighting the significant progress in defense and security cooperation between Japan and the Philippines.
The ambassador underscored the geographical proximity of Japan and the Philippines as maritime nations and their shared strategic interest.
He also emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral defense cooperation, calling the recently approved Reciprocal Access Agreement a milestone that paves the way for further collaboration.
