THE Philippines once again demonstrated its academic excellence on the global stage as the national team achieved a remarkable 100 percent medal haul at the 6th Copernicus International Science Olympiad held in Houston, Texas, from Jan. 5-10, 2025. Competing against some of the brightest young minds worldwide, the Philippine delegation proudly brought home two golds, one silver, and three bronze medals, highlighting the nation's exceptional talent and dedication to science and education.
The gold medalists were Rjian Felminia Acevedo, Grade 10, and John Hermes Mariñas, Grade 5, who both excelled in their respective fields. Iwen Sabio Manaba, Grade 11, secured a silver medal, while Jaymee Kristen Concha, Grade 9, and Richmarth Duke Bad-Ang and Marquis Xavier Zamuco, both in Grade 12, earned bronze medals, completing the team's extraordinary performance.
The event opened at the Cullen Theater at the University of Houston, with competitions held at Rice University. As part of the program, participants were also treated to an educational visit to the NASA Space Center, inspiring them to dream big and pursue excellence in science.
Adding to the pride and celebration, Consul General Gunther Emil Sales of the Philippine Consulate General in Houston graced the awarding ceremony held at Hilton Houston last Jan. 9, 2025, to show his support for the Philippine team. His presence underscored the importance of the delegation's achievement in representing the Philippines on the international stage.
Guided by their country coordinator, Engr. Elizabeth Rodriguez, the Philippine team, shone brightly in this prestigious Olympiad, which fosters creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among students from Grades 3 to 12 in disciplines such as Mathematics, Physics, Natural Sciences, Astronomy, Cyber Security, and Film.
