The Philippines has been reelected as the vice president of the United Nations Tourism's 26th General Assembly, as well as chair of the Commission for East Asia and the Pacific, according to the Department of Tourism.
DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco has expressed her gratitude for the reelection.
“In behalf of the Department of Tourism and the Philippines, we express our profound gratitude to our fellow member nations for this vote of confidence upon leadership of the Philippines, especially towards our sustainable tourism development agenda that prioritizes inclusivity and resilience,” she said in an Instagram video Wednesday.
According to her, this agenda focuses “on the welfare of tourism stakeholders, the expansion of livelihood and employment opportunities, the longevity of our destinations, and the provision of meaningful and purposeful experiences” as tourists learn about the country's heritage, culture, and the identity of Filipinos.
“We accept this renewed mandate with humility and with a stronger resolve towards collaboration and working together towards our shared aspirations for the mutual development of our nations,” Frasco said.
The Philippines was first elected to the two positions in 2023 during the 55th meeting of the UN Tourism Regional Commission for East Asia and the Pacific in Cambodia.
In the following year, the country hosted the 36th joint meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the Commission for South Asia (CAP-CSA), as well as the first-ever United Nations Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Asia and the Pacific in Cebu.
According to the UN Tourism's official website, the UN Tourism General Assembly is a gathering of the World Tourism Organization that happens every two years.
The event approves the budget and work programs in tourism and also discusses principal topics in the tourism sector. It is known as the most important global gathering of senior and high-level tourism officials in government and the private sector.
