MANILA, Philippines — "Renoir," a Japanese film co-produced by the Philippines' Nathan Studios will compete in the 2025 Cannes competition slate.
Nathan Studios' founder, actress Sylvia Sanchez, shared the good news on her social media accounts on Wednesday.
"I'm still in disbelief and absolutely ecstatic that Renoir was selected," Sanchez wrote.
Directed by Chie Hayakawa — co-produced with Eiko Mizuno Gray and Jason Gray, Christophe Bruncher, Yulia Evina Bhara, and Philippines' very own award-winning director Alemberg Ang — the movie is set in Tokyo, year 1987.
According to IMDB.com, the story follows 11-year-old Fuki whose father, Keiji, is battling cancer, and in and out of hospital. Her mother, Utako, is constantly stressed out from caring for Keiji while holding down a full-time job. Left alone with her rich imagination, Fuki becomes fascinated by telepathy and falls ever deeper into her own fantasy world.
