MANILA, Philippines — It’s a brand new Day for newly-crowned PVL All-Filipino champion Petro Gazz as Angels team manager Dave Dichupa confirmed yesterday that former Baylor and Maryland University outside hitter Giovanna Milana Day will reinforce the squad in the 2025 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Champions League at the PhilSports Arena on April 20-27.
There are 12 teams participating in the invitational competition which was previously known as the Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championships. As host, the Philippines was allowed to enter two teams but a third was added to fill in for Japan which withdrew as its domestic league is still in progress. Each team is permitted a maximum of three foreign players who may be on the court at any time.
Petro Gazz, Creamline and PLDT will represent the Philippines. In the elims, the 12 teams are bracketed in four pools of three. Creamline is with Zhetysu of Kazakhstan and Al Naser of Jordan in Pool A. Petro Gazz joins Kaohsiung Taipower of Chinese-Taipei and Hip Hing of Hong Kong in Pool B. Beijing BAIC Motor of China, VTV Binh Dien Long an of Vietnam and Sapa Tehran of Iran are in Pool C. PLDT is with Nakhon Ratchasima QminC of Thailand and Queensland Pirates of Australia in Pool D. The draw was held in Bangkok last March 12. The top two placers of each pool advance to the quarterfinals with Pool A engaging Pool D and Pool B facing Pool C.
Day, 27, will team with Fil-Ams Brooke Van Sickle and MJ Philips under Japanese coach Koji Tsuzurabara. The 6-1 spiker has played in the Indonesian and Korean leagues. Creamline’s imports are Erica Staunton of USA, Anasstassiya Kolomoyets of Kazakhstan and Anastasiya Kudryashova of Russia. PLDT will be reinforced by Cuban Wilma Sales who’s joined by Fil-Canadian Savi Davison. The winner and runner-up will qualify for the 2025 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Club World Championships. Last year, Imoco Volley Conegliano of Italy took the world crown in Hangzhou.
