Captain libero Detdet Pepito and outside hitter Jonna Perdido will reinforce the UST Golden Tigresses for the final time as they return for the next UAAP season
MANILA, Philippines – After days of contemplation, Detdet Pepito and Jonna Perdido committed to play their fifth and final UAAP year for the UST Golden Tigresses, university athletics director Fr. Rodel Cansancio, OP, said on Thursday, May 8.
“We’re overjoyed by their decision and deeply grateful they’ve chosen to stay with us despite being eligible to turn pro,” Cansancio told Rappler in a message.
“What’s most important to UST is that they’ve completed their studies. We prioritize their academic achievement and appreciate their commitment to our program. We’re thrilled that these two have extended their stay with us.”
Perdido’s return is a welcome development for UST after she missed the Tigresses’ Season 87 women’s volleyball campaign due to a knee injury.
Without Perdido, who suffered a left anterior cruciate ligament tear, the Pepito-captained Tigresses got booted out of the Final Four by the La Salle Lady Spikers.
The two players paid Cansancio a courtesy call at his UST office as the two confirmed their commitment in exhausting their UAAP eligibility.
Pepito is graduating with an elementary education degree, while Perdido is about to finish her fitness and sports management program this June.
“I’m super proud and thankful for those who supported us, I know we went through a lot this season,” Pepito said in her exit interview last Sunday, May 4.
“We had a slow start, but we never really gave up and stuck with UST’s system,” she added.
Still unsure is Pia Abbu, who is contemplating a move to the pros. – Rappler.com
