CALAPAN CITY — The entry of Naujan District Jail in the annual "Saranggolahan sa Naujan" Kite Festival copped the Best Design award on Easter Sunday at the Naujan Sports Complex in Oriental Mindoro.

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) Region said the kite was built and designed by persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) as part of their rehabilitation program.

"The yearly activity featured colorful, handcrafted kites made by inmates and is part of the bureau's continuing rehabilitation program aimed at fostering creativity, discipline and social reintegration," said BJMP-Mimaropa information officer JO3 Joefrie Anglo.

"The initiative goes beyond vocational training, integrating arts and cultural expression into the rehabilitation process."

The entry of Naujan District Jail resembled a BJMP transport vehicle which won the Best Design award in the synchronized kite category.

The inmates, under the supervision of the jail guards, were allowed to fly their kite alongside 16 other participants.

"The Saranggolahan Festival gave the PDLs a rare opportunity to demonstrate their talents and allowed the public to witness the progress and transformation taking place inside our facilities," Anglo added.

JO Allen Glen Delica, community relations officer of BJMP-Naujan District Jail, said that activities like this help the PDLs rediscover their potential and rebuild their sense of purpose.

Anglo also said that the bureau continues to implement reforms and programs aligned with its mandate to rehabilitate inmates and prepare them for reintegration into society.

The kite festival is a yearly summer event of the municipal government of Naujan that enjoins kite flying enthusiasts to participate in the activity and promotes the tourism potential of the town.
