MANILA, Philippines — Reacting to the recent shooting incident at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, the Philippine Coast Guard has directed PCG personnel to ensure that their firearms are inaccessible to children.

“Firearms must not be left in readily accessible areas such as tables, drawers, cabinets, bags, vehicles or sleeping areas,” the PCG said. “If adequate security cannot be maintained at the house, the gun must be returned to the designated unit armory or depository.”

Two students, including the 14-year-old gunman, died on campus on Aug. 18.

Reports said the Grade 9 shooter got hold of the firearms in the car of his father, an officer of the Bureau of Customs.

PCG acquires 2 US ships

Meanwhile, two patrol vessels from the US have been acquired by the PCG.

Arriving in October, the 27-meter protector-class ships will be used by the PCG in search and rescue missions and maritime domain awareness patrols. The ships will be used for maritime environmental protection operations.
