ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Tuesday aided a Chinese seafarer accidentally electrocuted on a dry bulk carrier transiting the Basilan Strait.

Responding to a distress call from Chinese flag bearer MIN HUA 9, the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM) mobilized Tubbataha, a multi-role response vessel, to evacuate the 55-year-old crewman.

With a medical team on board, Tubbataha traveled around five nautical miles off this city and provided first aid before evacuating the victim to the nearest hospital, with the coordination of the Bureau of Quarantine.

The victim is in stable condition, the PCG said.

CGDSWM commander Commodore Rejard Marfe commended the quick response, which highlighted the PCG’s commitment to saving lives and ensuring maritime safety under the country’s territorial waters.
