PBA: Pogoy thankful for personal victory despite Finals defeat

MANILA, Philippines–TNT guard Roger Pogoy finally changed his luck in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

After playing sparingly in previous Finals appearances, mostly because of hamstring issues, Pogoy made it through the most recent championship series without missing a single game.

The Tropang 5G ultimately fell to Barangay Ginebra, 88-76, in Game 7, but the mere fact that Pogoy emerged healthy by the end of it all was a victory in itself for the TNT sharpshooter.

“I got it now. I got to finish a conference without any injury and I’m grateful,” he told the Inquirer.

“I finally finished one Finals without any pain. I’m not feeling anything now. I’m just grateful for that. I’m not nursing any injuries.”

In the decider, Pogoy left it all on the floor, finishing with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Unfortunately for TNT, it wasn’t enough as the Gin Kings snapped their three-year title drought at the expense of Pogoy and company.

Still, Pogoy showed more than good health throughout the seven-game series.

He also showed remarkable consistency. In fact, had TNT won the Commissioner’s Cup, the Finals MVP race could very well have come down to him and teammate Jordan Heading.

Aside from being thankful for a pain-free Finals run, Pogoy was equally proud of the teammates who battled through injuries in the deciding game.

Calvin Oftana suited up despite an injured calf, while Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser played through an ankle injury.

“I’m proud of them because even if they were hurting, they still tried to play for us,” Pogoy said. “I’m proud of us.”
