PBA: Jerom Lastimosa delivers after LA Tenorio’s tough love

MANILA, Philippines—Jerom Lastimosa, who often gets scolded by coach LA Tenorio, had a big hand in Magnolia’s 105-88 win over Meralco in their rain-delayed 2026  PBA Governors’ Cup encounter on Friday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

While veteran Ian Sangalang got the nod as the game’s best player, Lastimosa accounted for 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Hotshots posted back-to-back wins for the first time this conference, going 3-3 in Group B.

“Coach LA told us not to relax, because we know Meralco is not going to back down,” Lastimosa said.

His offensive outburst, which also included half of his six assists in the payoff period, came after the contest was stalled by a roof leak following the third, with the Hotshots holding a 71-70 lead.

Lastimosa was glad to make an impact for the Hotshots and impress Tenorio, who believes that the sophomore guard out of Adamson is capable of more.

“For me, I’m fine if he gives me an earful because he wants to see more of my potential,” he said. “And I don’t want to take it for granted, because that’s also how I started my UAAP career. I always get scolded until I become a better player.”

His contribution enabled Magnolia to move up in a tie for third with Blackwater in key result, given how tight the standings were in the group entering the ballgame.

“More than his scoring, I think the way he ran our offense was crucial,” Tenorio said. “I’m happy that he responded. The players know that I always scold him, because I know that he can do a lot for this team. I told him that it’s his responsibility now so that he could learn.

“But what I like about Jerom is that he’s a good listener and a good student of the game. That’s why I always keep an eye on him because I know he can be someone special to this team,” the Hotshots coach added.
