Sir Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier in "Avengers: Doomsday"

Marvel Studios

MANILA, Philippines — Fans will get one last chance to see Sir Patrick Stewart on the big screen this December following his passing at 86 years old.

The acting legend died after a battle with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia, leaving him staggered projects over the years.

His last stage performance was "No Man's Land" a decade ago at the Lyceum Theatre in Newcastle, United Kingdom followed mostly by voice work on television and film.

These include "Bait," "Dragon Rider," "Cosmos: Possible Worlds," the documentary "Breakthrough: The Ideas That Changed the World," and earlier this year "The Sheep Detectives."

Stewart did reprise his iconic role of Jean-Luc Picard for the three seasons of "Star Trek: Picard" as well as another popular character Professor Charles Xavier in 2022's "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," albeit a different version from the Professor X fans are familiar with.

That appearance made Professor X — and eventually the X-Men — official canon and future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney's 2019 acquisition of Fox, who previously owned the film rights to the mutant heroes.

The actor is set to portray Xavier once more in the upcoming blockbuster "Avengers: Doomsday" alongside other "X-Men" franchise veterans Sir Ian McKellan, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, and Alan Cumming.

In a tribute for Stewart, Marvel Studios confirmed that "Doomsday" would be the actor's last onscreen appearance after a nearly 60-year career.

"For more than 25 years, he brought a gravitas and profundity to the role, earning fans across the globe and helping to transform Super Hero storytelling forever. Sir Patrick Stewart leaves behind an indelible cultural footprint and legacy," Marvel said in a statement.

Before "Doomsday" and the "Doctor Strange" sequel, Stewart played Professor X seven times — most memorably in 2017's "Logan" opposite Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman. In that Oscar-nominated comic book film, Xavier is suffering from dementia and his telepathic abilities have become unstable.

Tributes continue to pour in for Stewart such as from Kevin Feige, William Shatner, George Takei, Famke Janssen, Will Wheaton, Jonathan Frakes, Ricky Gervais, and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
