MANILA, Philippines – The low pressure area (LPA) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is expected to trigger heavy rain in parts of Northern Luzon on Wednesday, July 2.

As of 3 am on Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the LPA was located 235 kilometers east of Echague, Isabela, or 200 kilometers east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora.

In its first stand-alone weather advisory for the LPA issued at 5 am, PAGASA warned that rain will be heaviest in the following provinces:

Wednesday, July 2

  • Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 millimeters): Cagayan, Apayao, Kalinga, Isabela

Thursday, July 3

  • Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm): Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos Norte

Friday, July 4

  • Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm): Batanes, Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos Norte

On Wednesday, the LPA will also cause scattered rain and thunderstorms in the rest of Cagayan Valley, the rest of the Cordillera Administrative Region, the Ilocos Region, Aurora, and Nueva Ecija.

PAGASA on Tuesday evening, July 1, said that the LPA already has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within 24 hours. It previously had a “medium” chance.

The weather bureau added in a Facebook post early Wednesday that since the LPA is now close to Philippine landmass, it might raise Signal No. 1 for the eastern parts of Northern Luzon and Central Luzon as soon as the weather system becomes a tropical depression. This would be to warn the affected areas of strong winds.

The country’s next tropical cyclone will be given the local name Bising.

PAGASA is also monitoring a tropical depression that developed outside PAR on Tuesday. This tropical depression is not expected to enter PAR or affect any part of the country, but it is within the weather bureau’s monitoring domain so updates are being provided to the public.

The tropical depression was last spotted 2,660 kilometers east northeast of extreme Northern Luzon at 3 am on Wednesday, moving north northwest at 15 kilometers per hour (km/h).

It has maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h and gustiness of up to 70 km/h.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon or habagat continues to affect Southern Luzon, Central Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao on Wednesday.

Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, and Western Visayas will see scattered rain and thunderstorms, while the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao will have isolated rain or thunderstorms.
