MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang has no information yet on the administration’s potential candidates for president in 2028, but has a message to those who engage in early politicking.
“To those who prioritize politics right now, think it over because you might not be qualified,” Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said at a press briefing yesterday.
“They should discern whether they can be of help to the nation or they will just enrich themselves,” she added.
During the ASEAN Editors and Economic Opinion Leaders Forum last Tuesday, President Marcos disclosed that the administration is already talking to some possible candidates for president in the next elections.
He did not name names, but cited the qualities that his successor should possess, including an understanding of economics, competence, the desire to improve the country and willingness to listen.
The 2028 presidential race became a hot topic after Vice President Sara Duterte, a former running mate of Marcos who has become a fierce critic of his administration, announced that she would seek the highest post in the land in 2028.
At the same press briefing, Castro lashed back at Duterte for claiming that governance has been “messy” under Marcos. ?“Look who’s talking,” the Palace press officer said.
Meanwhile in the city of Malolos, supporters of Sen. Rodante Marcoleta launched before noon yesterday a movement urging the senator to run for vice president in the 2028 presidential elections. — Ramon Efren Lazaro
