MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos is not bothered by the impeachment complaint filed against him and is confident it will not prosper because “he did nothing wrong,” Malacañang said yesterday.

Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro denied allegations that the impeachment complaint was a “scripted distraction,” as critics have claimed.

Castro said she was able to talk with the President about the impeachment case and was told he was unperturbed.

“Yes, I asked him personally, he said he is not bothered because he knows that he did not commit any impeachable offense that would make him accountable,” Castro told reporters in Filipino at a press briefing.

Castro said the President believes that all his actions are in accordance with the Constitution and the laws.

She stressed that an impeachment case is not good for the economy, as she denied allegations that the palace was behind the move.

Castro was reacting to claims by Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte that the impeachment complaint filed by lawyer Andre de Jesus was meant to divert attention from unresolved corruption issues.

Presidential sister Sen. Imee Marcos made the same assertion at a press briefing yesterday.

“This is just another drama series that looks like it will last for one year,” she said, apparently referring to the ban on the filing of more than one impeachment complaint within a year.

“We know the background of those who filed. The dramatic move is obvious. We have watched this film before. Bumenta na yan sa takilya (It’s grossed already in the box office),” the senator added.

Asked whether the Marcos administration has something to do with the filing of the impeachment case, Castro said, “Definitely, none.”

“We were never involved in planting of evidence like his father,” Castro said, referring to former president Rodrigo Duterte.

“I think they’re the ones who are used to it. So, under President Marcos, the Constitution and due process are respected,” she added.

Castro also denied reports that De Jesus was a lawyer of First Lady Liza Marcos and that he represented her in a disbarment case against Glenn Chong.

“I wish their allies would stop being sources of fake news because the First lady has never filed a disbarment case, and the one who filed the impeachment complaint against the President was never her lawyer,” Castro said. — Jose Rodel Clapano, Delon Porcalla, Marc Jayson Cayabyab
