‘Our goal has always been to provide a platform where these players can develop, gain exposure, and take their talents to the next level,’ says Manny Pacquiao, founder of the Junior MPBL

MANILA, Philippines – The Manny Pacquiao-owned Junior Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) will add more teams for its third season set to tip off in April this year.

The league said it will introduce at least two more teams for its Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18 divisions, expanding the pool of local players for its third season.

“The addition of new teams will not only enhance the competition, but also offer more chances for talented players to shine,” said Junior MPBL commissioner Keith Picazo.

“We hope to continue helping them achieve their goals, whether it’s earning a scholarship or even a spot in the professional leagues in the future.”

Officials also said that the league will continue to be a pathway for young players looking to score scholarships from universities.

“Our goal has always been to provide a platform where these players can develop, gain exposure, and take their talents to the next level. This third season promises to be even more exciting,” Pacquiao said.

Teams from Biñan (U14), San Pedro (U16,), and Palawan (U18) ruled their divisions in the second season.

The league also added an Under 21 bracket to provide collegiate athletes in lower-tier schools and commercial league to showcase their wares.

“We’ve witnessed the incredible potential of these young athletes over the past two seasons,” said Pacquiao, who founded the league in 2023.

“We’re just getting started…The third season will bring more excitement, better performances, and greater opportunities for all the athletes. We promise fans and players alike an unforgettable experience,” he added.

Sam Esomchi took the U14 MVP in its second season, while Joseph Calo-oy bagged the U16 MVP nod.

Jhonas Panahon also snagged the MVP award in its U18 division.

The Junior MPBL’s third season will come two months after the MPBL’s 7th season tips off on February 1. – Rappler.com
