MANILA, Philippines — Forty-four kilos of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of P233.2 million were seized from two Indian nationals in Calamba, Laguna yesterday morning.
The suspects – identified as SK Munir, 30, and Abdul Alim, 32 – were reportedly in the drug list of the Calamba police.
Probers said the suspects were arrested after they allegedly sold an undetermined amount of cocaine to a police poseur buyer in Barangay La Mesa.
The illegal substance, wrapped in several sealed plastic bags, was placed in a paper bag and cardboard box, each containing two kilos and 42 kilos, respectively.
Aside from cocaine, members of the Calamba police and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) seized from the suspects a phone believed used in the illegal drug transaction, two passports and marked money.
The PDEA said the suspects were placed under surveillance for a week before the sting was conducted.
The illegal substance was brought to the PDEA laboratory for examination.
Charges for violating Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 will be filed against the suspects, police said.
Meanwhile, in Iloilo, an official of the Sangguniang Kabataan was arrested in a sting in Sara town on Friday.
The suspect, whose identity was withheld, allegedly yielded shabu with an estimated street value of P2.04 million and 10 grams of marijuana to anti-narcotics agents in Barangay Ardemil, according to Brig. Gen. Josefino Ligan, Western Visayas police director.
Ligan said the suspect was a major supplier of illegal drugs and has been in the watch list of the police.
“This operation shows that the police will pursue all individuals involved in the illegal drug trade regardless of status or position in the community,” Ligan said in a statement. — Ed Amoroso
