MANILA, Philippines — The government has received more than 300,000 barrels of diesel as it continues to build up fuel reserves amid the ongoing Middle East crisis, the Department of Energy (DOE) said on Saturday, April 11.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin confirmed the arrival of the shipment, saying it is part of efforts to strengthen supply amid global uncertainty.

“Dumating na (It has arrived)!” Garin said on Facebook.

"Shipment of PNOC EC from Malaysia. That’s 329,000 barrels or 52,311,000 liters of diesel purchased by the government to stock up on supply while the Middle East war is not over," she said.

"Such a complex world isn’t it? Someone from the Americas starts a war in the Middle East and causes suffering in Asia," she added.

The shipment, coursed through the Philippine National Oil Company-Exploration Corp. (PNOC-EC), came from Malaysia and forms part of the government’s ongoing effort to build a fuel buffer amid global oil market volatility.

It is included in a planned 900,000-barrel import program for April, to be delivered in three batches of 300,000 barrels each.

The remaining shipments are expected in the second and third weeks of the month, sourced from North Asia or India and Oman, respectively.

This comes after Garin disclosed in a Malacañang briefing on Friday that the government has already acquired 165 million liters of oil through PNOC to augment supply for oil companies.

The Energy chief said the supply came from Malaysia, Singapore, India and Oman, as the government continues to diversify sourcing beyond the Middle East.

She added that the 165 million liters have been confirmed for delivery, though she did not provide a schedule.

The DOE earlier said the country’s oil inventory has improved to around 50 days’ worth of supply, from the usual 30 days, though it noted that actual supply levels vary depending on consumption and replenishment.

The government has also been sourcing liquefied petroleum gas from India, Argentina and Canada as part of broader efforts to strengthen energy security.
