MANILA, Philippines — A total of 216,144 local and overseas jobs will be offered during government-initiated job fairs scheduled for May 1, the Department of Labor and Employment has announced.

According to DOLE, the majority of the available 181,933 positions are for local employment, while 34,211 are for overseas placement.

The National Capital Region leads the regions with the highest number of job openings, offering more than 63,000 vacancies. Central Luzon follows with approximately 32,000, and Calabarzon with over 18,000 available jobs.

Jobseekers may apply for positions in various industries, including manufacturing, retail, business process outsourcing, accommodation and food service activities and financial and insurance services.

Among the top vacancies are positions for production operators, sales clerks, call center representatives, service crewmembers and microfinance officers.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said the conduct of job fairs nationwide is among the highlights of DOLE’s activities for this year’s Labor Day celebration.

Jobseekers are encouraged to contact the nearest public employment service office, DOLE regional and field offices or visit the respective websites and social media pages of these offices for more information on job fair schedules and locations.

Teachers want pay hike

Meanwhile, aside from the efforts to provide employment opportunities, calls for improved compensation in the education sector also intensified ahead of Labor Day.

Thousands of public school teachers and education personnel submitted a petition to President Marcos on Tuesday, seeking a substantial salary increase.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) said it gathered signatures from hundreds of faculty clubs, associations and thousands of teachers and education support personnel nationwide.

In their petition, ACT stressed that public and private school educators no longer receive reasonable compensation amid the country’s rising cost of living.

The group highlighted that Filipino educators have faced severe financial hardships due to the escalating prices of goods, citing the constitutional provision that mandates a living wage for workers.

“As such, we stand united in asserting the need for substantial salary increase for all teachers and employees in the education sector, to uplift our salaries to livable and decent levels,” they said.

ACT is pushing for an entry-level salary of P50,000 for teachers and a P33,000 minimum salary for education support personnel.

The petition, endorsed by over 800 faculty clubs and associations, appealed to the President for action to empower teachers, strengthen the education system and contribute to national development.

“We hope for your genuine commitment in empowering our teachers, uplifting our educational system and wielding it as a powerful tool for national development. We look forward to your most favorable response,” the group said.

Last week, ACT filed a similar petition before the Department of Education, criticizing the pay adjustments under Executive Order 64, which implements the Salary Standardization Law VI. — Neil Jayson Servallos
