MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said it has successfully distributed over P5.65 billion in financial assistance to public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers across the country.
In a statement on Sunday, April 26, the DSWD said that more than 1.1 million PUJ drivers nationwide had already received financial assistance as of April 25.
According to the latest data from the department, a total of 1,130,333 drivers have received a one-time cash relief of P5,000 each.
The cash aid is being provided through the DSWD's Assistance to Individuals in Crisis (AICS) program.
The Philippines faced several rounds of oil price hikes after the Middle East conflict began on February 28, as the situation disrupted the movement of fuel through the critical Strait of Hormuz export route.
This caused petroleum products such as diesel, which is used by jeepney drivers, to exceed P130 per liter.
However, oil prices have declined over the past two weeks, with diesel prices rolling back by around P20 per liter.
