MANILA, Philippines — The emergency room of the Ospital ng Maynila will be closed from May 24 to June 1 to accommodate critical repairs and facility upgrades, Mayor Isko Moreno announced yesterday.

Due to the temporary closure, patients needing emergency care will be referred to the six public hospitals managed by the Manila city government.

Moreno noted that the city government has been arranging setups to conduct the renovations without affecting emergency room operations. However, further evaluation indicated that this was “not safe to do so.”

“It’s not safe for everyone: for the patients, doctors and workers inside,” Moreno said. “We did all the strategy, with all abilities, every possible measure not to disrupt the emergency room, but it’s not possible.”

As a precaution, Moreno said ambulances and tent areas would be stationed outside the hospital to receive patients while the emergency room undergoes renovation.

He added that the renovation would be done on a 24-hour work scheme to ensure reopening on the scheduled date.

“My compromise is only for a week, and relief will surely follow as the emergency room of Ospital ng Maynila reopens,” Moreno said.

Dimasalang Bridge partly closed

Meanwhile, the northbound lane of Dimasalang Bridge will be closed starting today to give way to the second phase of the bridge’s rehabilitation and major repair works.

“The project aims to ensure the structural integrity, safety and continued serviceability of the bridge for the motoring public and nearby communities,” Moreno said.

The Department of Public Works and Highways said the repair works will be finished by the second week of October, ahead of Undas when the car volume is expected to become heavy as millions of visitors travel to the Manila North Cemetery.

The first phase of the rehabilitation and major repair on the southbound lane was completed on schedule. Moreno said he was pleased with the work.

Motorists are advised to wait for the city government’s full traffic rerouting plan to be published on its official social media platforms.
