MANILA, Philippines — The culinary identity of Ormoc City has been preserved in a tome with the launch of “Homemade: A Taste of Ormoc,” a coffee table cookbook that features the city’s signature dishes and the stories behind them.

“The 306-page book is a labor and flavor of love. It documents Ormocanon culinary tradition and heritage through 77 dishes, many with accompanying recipes,” said award-winning journalist Bum Tenorio Jr., the editor and lead writer of the book, during the launch at the Ormoc City Sports Complex.

Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez said “Homemade: A Taste of Ormoc” features heritage food, heirloom recipes and go-to dishes that are the city’s own.

“For three years, our writers and researchers knocked on doors, sat around dining tables, listened to conversations that spanned stories of childhood, sacrifice, hope, laughter and resilience,” said Torres-Gomez, who initiated the book project.

“This book carries with it 77 expressions of love, which managed to travel through time in the form of 77 recipes,” she added.

“Generations of Ormocanons who have yet to be born will someday open this book and discover not only what our people cooked, but who our people were. That is an extraordinary gift,” said Leyte Fourth District Rep. Richard Gomez.

“Ormoc is a place where good food is found, from the most elegant households to holes-in-the-wall and on streets where the flavors and textures of the city can be savored through the humblest nourishment,” said Tenorio, a columnist for The STAR.
