Fireworks explode in the sky around the London Eye and The Elizabeth Tower, commonly known by the name of the clock's bell, "Big Ben", at the Palace of Westminster, home to the Houses of Parliament, in central London, at midnight on January 1, 2025.

MANILA, Philippines — Local government units have been advised to organize community fireworks displays to prevent accidents and injuries during the New Year revelry.

Staging a fireworks display in a common area is a safe way of welcoming the New Year, according to Albert Domingo, spokesman for the Department of Health.

Domingo said it is safer to allow professionals to handle the fireworks display to prevent accidents at home.

“Let professionals handle the work. Children and drunk people should not be allowed to light pyrotechnics products,” Domingo said.

He said it is better if residents would simply watch community fireworks displays.

“They will feel relaxed compared to lighting firecrackers themselves,” he said.

Last year, the health department recorded 844 fireworks-related injuries, particularly from Dec. 21 to Jan. 6.

“Let’s have this number reduced. Let’s target to record less than 844 or no injuries at all this year,” Domingo said.
