MANILA, Philippines — One to two tropical cyclones are expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) this December, as the country monitors developing weather systems over the Pacific.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) yesterday said a cloud cluster northeast of the country may intensify into a low-pressure area in the coming days and could enter PAR. If it strengthens into a tropical cyclone, it will be named Wilma, the 23rd storm of the year.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Koto (formerly Verbena) was last spotted northwest of Pag-asa Island and remains outside PAR, with no direct impact on the country.

Weather conditions across the regions will continue to be influenced by prevailing climate systems: the northeast monsoon will bring rains over Batanes and the extreme north of Luzon; easterlies will trigger localized thunderstorms over much of Luzon and the Visayas and the intertropical convergence zone will generate rains across Eastern Visayas, Caraga and the Davao region.

PAGASA said no gale warning is in effect, but advised small vessels to remain cautious due to thunderstorms that may cause rough seas.

The agency added that from midweek to Friday, stronger winds may bring cloudier skies and heavier rains over Northern Luzon, while the potential low-pressure area could enhance rains in the Visayas, Southern Luzon, the Bicol region and parts of Mindanao.

PAGASA reminded the public to monitor official advisories for updates on developing weather disturbances, especially as December storms commonly track toward the Visayas and Mindanao due to dominant high-pressure systems over northern Luzon.
