MANILA, Philippines — Host-comedian Vice Ganda echoed the calls of many Filipinos for Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo to reconsider her plans for the 2028 elections, right in front of the former vice president herself.
Vice was a special guest at an event on May 1, Labor Day, for the launch of Naga City's new tourism brand, "Naga is the Heart," during the start of the inaugural Isarog International Hot Air Balloon and Music Festival.
Leni joined and embraced Vice onstage while the "It's Showtime" host was speaking to the crowd, telling everyone that he agreed to attend after just one text message.
The Naga City mayor pointed out that even people from outside the city showed up to see Vice and reiterated her gratitude.
"Maraming salamat ma'am Leni. Any time i-text niyo ako, anuman mangyari, pupuntahan at pupuntahan ko kayo," Vice told Leni. "Masaya akong naririto, lahat ng panawagan niyo sa'min didinggin namin, sana dinggin mo rin ang panawagan namin."
The crowd cheered as Vice referenced the clamor for Leni, who has ruled out another run for a national post, to seek the presidency again in 2028.
Leni ran for president in 2022 but finished behind Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Three years later, she became the first woman elected mayor of Naga City, a position she is eyeing to run for again in the next elections.
The former vice president only smiled at Vice's remarks even as the comedian led the crowd in chanting "Leni!" and forming the "L" gesture with their hands.
"Naga is the heart, you are our heart, you are our hope," Vice told Leni. "We need you to continue hoping for a wonderful future, not just for our families but for the entire Philippines, tama?! Dinggin niyo kami! Para niyo nang awa!"

'Sana lahat tayo... ganyan araw-araw'
Vice said he wanted others to experience the same sense of relief felt by people in Naga City under her leadership, noting that other parts of the country do not feel the same way.
"Sana lahat tayo, sana buong Pilipinas ganyan araw-araw," Vice said. "Hindi madali ang buhay, may kahirapan, pero malaking bagay sa mga puso natin yung gaan at saya, yung pusong walang takot, pangamba, at puno ng pag-asa dahil alam natin tayong lahat ay pinagmumunuan ng isang mabuting puso rin."
Vice thanked Leni again and joked about seeing her in their campaign, which drew another round of "Leni!" chants and "L" hand gestures.
"'Wag ka ma-pressure, next year pa tayo mag-a-announce!" Vice said, before adding that Naga City should continue enjoying Leni's leadership.
Vice reiterated Leni's commitment to serve Naga City until her term ends, then added that he hopes she could still change her mind.
"Promise, magpapakalalaki ako, tumakbo ka lang uli!" Vice said. "Charot lang, baka 'di ko mapangako 'yun."
Several celebrities have also called on Leni to reconsider her 2028 plans, including Sharon Cuneta, wife of Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, who was her running mate in 2022.
"We are all storming the heavens with our prayers for you to change your mind and run once more — just one more time po Ma'am, for President," Sharon said earlier this week.
