MANILA, Philippines — Up to 135 registered fishermen may be affected by an oil spill caused by the beaching of a cargo vessel in Badoc, Ilocos Norte, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

The BFAR said that as of Tuesday, traces of oil spilled from the M/V LCT MSCI 1 were observed along the shorelines of Barangay La Virgen Milagrosa in Badoc and Barangay Dadalaquiten Norte in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Aside from fishermen, the incident may affect the operation of 30 registered fishing vessels based in Barangay La Virgen Milagrosa.

Validation of affected fisherfolk and fishing communities is ongoing, the BFAR said.

As of yesterday, no fish kill incident or abnormal fish behavior was reported in the municipality.

Authorities have not reported contamination of fish and marine products gathered in the area.

To ensure safety, the BFAR conducted a fish and seafood sampling in areas possibly affected by the oil spill.

Regular sensory evaluation and monitoring will be conducted to determine the presence of oil and grease in fish and fishery products, the BFAR said.

“Samples may also be subjected to laboratory testing to ensure that fish and marine products remain safe for human consumption,” the agency added.

Fisherfolk, fish traders, seafood vendors and the public have been advised to monitor updates issued by authorities.

The public has been urged to report to the nearest BFAR office or local government unit incidents of fish kill, abnormal fish behavior or any unusual condition of the coastal waters.
