Nun-surgeon Eva Fidela Maamo

Ramon Magsaysay Award via Facebook

MANILA, Philippines — Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Eva Fidela Maamo died.

Maamo, a Catholic nun and surgeon, passed away at the age of 85, according to a Facebook post by the Ramon Magsaysay Award.

“The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation joins the Philippine nation in mourning the passing of 1997 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee SR. EVA FIDELA MAAMO, surgeon, missionary, and tireless servant of the poor,” the award said.

“Diminutive in stature but immense in spirit, she led not by authority but by example. Her volunteers pressed on in exhausting surgeries, they said, simply because Sister Eva kept going. Through a life wholly given to "the least of His brethren," she showed that compassion, made concrete and courageous, is itself a form of nation-building,” it added.

She was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1997.

According to the foundation, Maamo founded the "Foundation of Our Lady of Peace Mission, Inc" in 1986, which established no-fee health clinics in communities.

The foundation founded by Maamo also involved “feeding malnourished children, sheltering street youth and abused women, and launching livelihood programs that restored dignity to the most vulnerable.”

“Her medical-surgical missions brought volunteer doctors, nurses, and dentists to far-flung communities across the country—treating tens of thousands at no cost,” the foundation said.

According to an ABSCBN documentary in 2019 featuring Maamo, she has performed thousands of operations, saying she often performs 300 to 400 surgeries per mission.
