MANILA, Philippines — Motorists can expect a faster route to Novaliches, Quezon City through the North Luzon Expressway when the first phase of NLEX Segment 8.2 opens by September.

Also called NLEX-C5 Northlink, the first section of the segment has reached 60-percent completion, NLEX Corp. president and general manager Luis Reñon said.

Set for completion by June, the project will provide access to Novaliches from Mindanao Toll Plaza.

The first phase of NLEX-C5 Northlink covers two kilometers of elevated roads, bypassing Mindanao Avenue and Tullahan River.

It will benefit about 11,000 motorists daily and decongest some of the busiest roads in Quezon City, including Quirino Highway.

After the first phase, NLEX Corp. is proceeding with the construction of two more segments that will connect NLEX and C5 Road through Quezon City.

Right-of-way challenges are expected, Reñon said, as the remaining sections would require the relocation of over 20,000 families.

The tollway operator is leaning on the Department of Public Works and Highways’ commitment to speed up relocation efforts for informal settler families.

Based on a project brief, the NLEX-C5 Northlink’s next stage will extend for 3.8 kilometers between Quirino Highway and Regalado Avenue.

The third and final leg will span 2.5 kilometers to Congressional Avenue, a few kilometers away from C5.

Daily traffic along NLEX is projected to decrease by up to 1.5 percent, or about 5,000 vehicles daily, as Filipinos abandon private cars amid soaring fuel prices.
