MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Nickel Industry Association (PNIA) said its members are already incorporating the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in their social development and management programs (SDMPs) even before the government required them to do so.
PNIA said it lauded the Department of Natural and Resources (DENR) directive of requiring mining companies to integrate the 17 SDGs into their SDMPs.
“This initiative is a critical step in ensuring that the mining sector continues to contribute meaningfully to the country’s sustainable development goals and aligns with global best practices,” PNIA president Dante Bravo said.
“PNIA has long been ahead of the curve in adopting and integrating sustainability principles into its operations,” he added.
Bravo noted that the group published its first SDG report in 2020, with a follow-up report published last year. He said PNIA members remain compliant to 15 out of the 17 SDGs, reflecting their dedication to environmental protection, community well-being and inclusive development.
“These efforts are directly reflected in our strategic investments and programs across the nation,” he said.
The group said its initiatives have been focused on SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), areas where mining has a pivotal role to play in advancing sustainable practices.
The group noted that in 2023, its members invested P4.3 billion that benefited communities through job creation, health programs, educational scholarships and environmental protection measures, which included the planting of nearly 4.3 million trees.
“PNIA calls for stronger partnerships and collaboration with all stakeholders, especially at the local level, to ensure that SDMP funds are utilized effectively and efficiently,” Bravo said.
“By working closely with local communities, we can ensure that our investments align with the real needs on the ground, resulting in long-term benefits that foster self-reliant, resilient communities,” he added.
Bravo said PNIA reaffirms its commitment to responsible mining practices and to advancing the SDGs.
“Our mission is clear: we will continue to prioritize sustainability, community welfare, and environmental stewardship, ensuring that our industry contributes to the long-term economic and social development of the country, creating a resilient and sustainable future for all,” he said.
DENR earlier issued a new department order, requiring mining companies nationwide to incorporate SDGs in their respective SDMPs in line with President Marcos’ call to use the country’s natural resources for sustainable development.
