MANILA, Philippines — Emerging Power Inc. (EPI), the renewable energy unit of Nickel Asia Corp., has entered into a partnership with Acwa Power Philippines to develop up to 5,000 megawatts (MW) in generation capacity across the country.
EPI and Acwa Power Philippines signed a joint development agreement (JDA) with Acwa Power to expand renewable and gas-fired power generation in the Philippines and serve retail electricity suppliers and distribution utilities.
Acwa Power Philippines is a subsidiary of Acwa, a private water desalination company based in Saudi Arabia.
Under the JDA, both companies will identify and develop potential new power projects across the country.
The agreement also seeks to establish an immediate pathway to bid jointly into the Philippine government’s Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP), which aims to hold bidding for developers to supply clean power distribution.
The companies seek to submit proposals in response to the government’s call for more investments in renewable energy.
The agreement is positioned to respond to the country’s rapid electrification needs, accelerating data center demand and the government’s 35 percent renewables target by 2030.
“EPI brings deep local knowledge, an operating renewables base, and a credible growth plan. We bring three decades of delivering large-scale power and water assets on time and on budget. Together, 5,000 MW is a starting point, not a limit,” Acwa CEO Samir Serhan said.
For his part, EPI chairman and CEO Martin Antonio Zamora said that the agreement would actively accelerate the country’s transition toward a low-carbon economy.
“Together, we are building scalable, reliable, and sustainable power infrastructure that will energize Filipino communities, drive economic growth, and safeguard our generations to come,” he said.
