Negros' Panaad festival to remain 'apolitical'

BACOLOD CITY — The Panaad sa Negros Festival will remain "apolitical," Rayfrando Diaz II, provincial administrator, said Wednesday.

Diaz said that the festival's executive committee (execom) will still discuss the proposal of banning campaigning during the duration of Panaad sa Negros Festival of former governor Rafael Coscolluela, who is currently a consultant of Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson.

If the execom approves Coscolluela's proposal, Lacson will issue a memorandum enforcing it, Diaz said.

The recommendation is to keep the festival apolitical, he said, which would also mean not allowing campaign materials at the festival site.

"Everything is all set for this year's Panaad sa Negros Festival," he also said.

This year's theme is "The Future Unfolds."

The provincial government has allocated P30 million for the annual festivities, including support for local government units.

Each participating town and city in Negros Occidental will receive P400,000 in assistance, while Lin-ay sa Negros contestants will be given P50,000 each.

The festival will be held at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City from March 24 to March 30.

Meanwhile, artists who will perform in Panaad have already stated that they will not endorse or promote any candidate.

Among the expected performers are Rico Blanco and Janella Salvador, he said.
