ILOILO CITY — The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is spearheading a major restoration initiative of iconic heritage buildings along Calle Real in the city proper district of this city.
Mayor Raisa Treñas announced Monday that an NCCA official, whom she did not identify, reached out to her last week to confirm a proposed partnership for the repainting project.
“This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity that is offered for the city,” she said.
Calle Real, known for its collection of well-preserved neoclassical, art deco and Beaux-Arts buildings, has stood as a symbol of Iloilo’s rich architectural legacy that began during the Spanish colonial era.
It rose to prominence during the American period as a vibrant commercial center that showcased imported European goods.

Calle Real and its adjacent streets were declared a heritage zone in 2014 by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.
Treñas said NCCA representatives are expected to visit the city on July 13 to discuss a memorandum of agreement for the repainting project.
In preparation, the City Engineer’s Office and the City Architect’s Office will conduct an ocular inspection to determine the total paintable area and estimate the volume of materials needed.
“This will make sure that our City Proper area will bring in more tourists. That’s why we are planning programs that will breathe new life into this historic area,” Treñas added.
Treñas also emphasized the need to revitalize Calle Real not only for tourism but also to support struggling local businesses in the area.
She also acknowledged feedback from visitors who noted the limited dining options in the area, often prompting them to explore other parts of the city.
Treñas earlier announced that the city government is exploring the creation of a regular night market along Calle Real to boost nighttime foot traffic and provide additional attractions for both locals and tourists.
