National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag brief the press at the PCO building in Malacañang on May 14, 2026

MANILA, Philippines — An association of retired agents and former employees of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) denounced what they claim are “attempts to influence the President into suspending and dismissing NBI Director Melvin Matibag and his agents.”
The NBI Retirees and Ex-Employees Association Inc. (NBI-REXEAI) described such calls as ‘“unfounded and unjust,” stressing that the current NBI chief and his men are just performing their duties.
“It is imperative that we stand firm against these attempts to intimidate law enforcement officials who are dedicated to serving the public and executing their responsibilities with integrity,” NBI-REXEAIsaid in a statement.
The group made the statement in response to Sen. Imee Marcos, who has urged her brother President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to suspend three NBI officials and Matibag in the aftermath of shooting incident at the Senate building involving Senate guards.
The NBI-REXEAIRexeai members, at the same time, said they “strongly condemn the reckless actions taken by the Senate guards under the leadership of Mao Aplasca who unjustifiably discharged their firearms at the NBI and within the Senate premises.”
Matibag, for his part, reiterated the agency’s duty to apprehend fugitives, including Sen. Ronald Dela Rosa, who has a standing warrant from the International Criminal Court.
“As a law enforcement arm of the government, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will carry out Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida’s order to serve the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Senator Ronald dela Rosa,” Matibag said in a statement posted on the agency’s Facebook page.
“From the outset, the NBI has been consistent in its position that Dela Rosa must be arrested based on the ICC arrest warrant issued against the senator for a case for crimes against humanity related to the Duterte administration’s bloody war on drugs,” he added. (Contributed story)
