MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has launched an investigation into a remark made by Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, who allegedly wants President Marcos killed.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag said the bureau is looking into reports about a supposed assassination plot linked to former president Rodrigo Duterte as well as the mayor’s remark that they “only need one head” (to roll), supposedly referring to Marcos.
Mayor Duterte made the remark during the launch of the Reform Alliance for Good Governance and Accountability or RAGE Coalition on Sunday.
Matibag said a memorandum will be issued to formalize the investigation.
The move came after Palace press officer Claire Castro said that authorities are mandated to investigate threats against the President as well as against ordinary citizens.
The alleged plot stemmed from claims made by Ramil Madriaga, self-confessed bagman of Vice President Sara Duterte, in a supplemental affidavit submitted to the House committee on justice.
The committee is hearing the impeachment complaint filed against the Vice President.
Madriaga claimed that plans were discussed to oust Marcos through assassination or a coup if the President refused to step down.
Hired guns identified
Madriaga has identified some of the killers supposedly hired to assassinate Marcos, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said yesterday.
“He has identified some hitmen. I think it will come out in future testimonies,” Remulla said.
In his testimony before the House committee, Madriaga said the Duterte family had drafted plans to force Marcos out of office.
Madriaga said there was an agreement between Marcos and the Duterte clan, wherein he was supposed to step down in 2025 to allow the Vice President to assume as chief executive for the next three years.
Asked if there is a credible threat against Marcos, Remulla said: “It will never disappear, whether it comes from that camp or any other camps.”
“The President is the most protected person in the Philippines precisely because of the nature of his job,” Remulla said.
